Sustainability & Community Impact
At Bali Protocol Service, we believe true luxury is not only about impeccable service but also responsible stewardship across Indonesia’s 17,000 islands. Our operations are deeply intertwined with this natural beauty, and we hold a profound responsibility to protect these assets for future generations. Our sustainability philosophy is guided by the Balinese principle of Tri Hita Karana—a concept so vital it was inscribed on UNESCO’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2019. This ancient wisdom informs every facet of our business, from environmental conservation to community empowerment, ensuring our presence contributes positively to the island’s delicate balance.
Environmental Commitments
We are dedicated to minimizing our environmental footprint and actively contributing to conservation efforts across the Indonesian archipelago. Our approach is proactive and data-driven, focusing on measurable impact. As part of this commitment, we have set a clear target to achieve a 15% reduction in our ground transport carbon emissions by 2027, using our 2023 operational data as a baseline. We transparently track and report on our progress towards this goal annually.
Carbon Offset Program
We acknowledge that our core ground transportation services, utilizing a fleet of premium vehicles like the Toyota Alphard and Mercedes V-Class, have an unavoidable carbon footprint. To mitigate this, we have partnered with the Rimba Raya Biodiversity Reserve Project in Central Kalimantan, Borneo, one of the world’s largest REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation) projects. We meticulously calculate the emissions from every client transfer—for example, a typical 45-kilometer transfer from Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) to a private villa in Uluwatu generates approximately 8.2 kg of CO₂. We then purchase corresponding verified carbon credits, effectively making 100% of our ground transport carbon-neutral. In 2025, we aim to expand this program to cover emissions from our partner helicopter and private jet ground handling services.
Reducing Single-Use Plastics
In alignment with Bali Governor Regulation No. 97 of 2018, which limits single-use plastics, we have completely eliminated them from our client-facing operations. All vehicles in our fleet are stocked with refillable, chilled glass bottles of premium local mineral water from Balian, sourced from the sacred slopes of Mount Agung. Since implementing this policy in 2022, we estimate we have prevented over 25,000 single-use plastic bottles from entering the local waste stream. We actively encourage our hotel and villa partners to adopt similar measures, and our partner vetting process, a key part of our partner evaluation, includes a 10-point audit of their plastic reduction and waste management policies.
Marine Conservation Support
Indonesia is the heart of the Coral Triangle, a global center of marine biodiversity that is home to 76% of the world’s known coral species. Recognizing this, we commit 2% of net revenue from every yacht charter to our partner, The Nature Conservancy, Indonesia. These funds support reef restoration in the Nusa Islands, where every $50 contributed helps transplant approximately five new coral fragments, and protect manta ray habitats in Komodo National Park. During the peak season from May to October, our contributions also help fund additional ranger patrols to combat illegal fishing.
Sustainable Sourcing and Waste Management
Our commitment extends to our back-office operations and supply chain. Client welcome amenities feature locally sourced, seasonal tropical fruits and artisanal snacks from suppliers like Javara Indigenous Indonesia, reducing food miles and supporting local agriculture. Our Denpasar head office operates on a digital-first principle, using electronic itineraries and invoicing to reduce paper consumption by over 90% since 2021. Furthermore, we have partnered with EcoBali Recycling, the island’s leading waste management service, to ensure that 100% of our office waste is sorted, processed, and recycled responsibly.
Community Empowerment & Social Responsibility
Our business is built on the strength and spirit of our local community. We are committed to creating lasting social impact, ensuring the economic benefits of high-end tourism are shared equitably. To achieve this, we source over 85% of our operational supplies—from guest amenities to vehicle maintenance—from family-owned businesses in the Denpasar and Badung regencies. Furthermore, we contribute 1% of our annual net profits to a dedicated community fund that supports local ‘banjar’ (community council) initiatives and youth education programs.
Local Employment and Development
We are proud that over 95% of our team are Indonesian nationals, hired from local communities. We provide stable employment with starting salaries that are, on average, 60% higher than the regional minimum wage (UMK Bali), plus comprehensive health benefits. Every team member completes a mandatory 80-hour onboarding program covering advanced defensive driving, ICAO-standard security protocols, and emergency first response. This investment is our greatest asset; over 40% of our senior management team began in operational roles with us, bringing deep-seated local knowledge that is essential for navigating complex logistical challenges.
Supporting Local Artisans and Enterprises
We make a conscious effort to integrate local, independent businesses into our supply chain. This includes commissioning master silversmiths from Celuk village for bespoke client gifts, using a trusted family-owned workshop in Denpasar for all vehicle maintenance, and partnering with community-based tourism projects for unique cultural experiences. A prime example is our relationship with the weavers of Tenganan Pegringsingan village, home of the rare double-ikat *gringsing* textile. We facilitate ethical, non-intrusive visits by ensuring groups are small (maximum of 4 guests), scheduled during off-peak hours, and that all purchases are made directly from the weavers at fair market prices, with zero commission taken by our service. This model provides direct economic benefit while respecting the community’s privacy and traditions.
Ethical Tourism Pledge
We are staunchly committed to tourism that protects local culture and wildlife. Our mandate forbids endorsing unethical animal attractions like elephant riding or caged civet coffee plantations. Instead, we curate respectful alternatives, such as guided tours in West Bali National Park, a critical habitat for the Bali Starling, of which fewer than 50 remain in the wild. We also arrange private visits to the Bali Sea Turtle Society in Kuta, which has successfully released over 300,000 hatchlings since 2001. Our pre-arrival materials educate clients on local customs, from temple etiquette to the meaning of the daily *canang sari* offerings.
Our commitment to sustainability is an ongoing journey. We continuously seek new ways to enhance our positive impact and refine our practices. Our next major initiative, slated to begin in 2025, is the transition of our sedan fleet to electric vehicles, with a firm target of achieving 30% electrification by 2028. This is one of many steps we are taking to operate in a manner that honors the incredible heritage and natural splendor of Indonesia for generations to come.
